Parquet de Versailles
‘In the early part of 2008, Christies auctioneers in Amsterdam sold more than 100 sq mtr of 1 mtr square Versailles pattern panels. This floor was removed from the Louvre in Paris in about 1995. It dated from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century and was bought by a Dutchman who then thought that the floor “made too much noise”. This distinctive wooden flooring was originally designed at the behest of Louis XIV to replace the popular marble flooring at his palace in Versailles which needed a lot of washing to keep it clean. The excessive water used in this had caused the floor beams to rot.
The parquet was offered for sale by Tomesen Parket & Design of Braamt in the Netherlands and was sold to an undisclosed “foreigner” for €1200 per sq mtr.’ (Sourced from an article in the Dutch magazine “Het Parketblad”)
The “Parquet de Versailles” floor in the picture above was made for and sold by us for a fraction of that price. But we are open to offers.
